Lærce Ryhl (Baryhl Art) – my history and background

Kunst24 News presents Lærce Ryhl, the Danish artist behind Baryhl Art. Her works are built layer on layer: reused paper, raw structure and figures caught in a change of skin. The story begins in a home where art was already a language.
Lærce grew up with parents who both chose the artist's path. They first trained as schoolteachers. Her father studied sculpture alongside teaching and made it his primary living. Her mother trained at Kolding Kunsthåndværkerskole in textile and design, then found her main path in photocollage. Art and making were never something to be discovered from outside – they were already in the room.
Only in 2019, during sick leave for stress, did it become clear that the creative work wanted more. From there the practice grew year by year. Baryhl Art was not a finished plan to become a full-time artist. The name comes from the surname Ryhl on her father's side, where art has run through generations. The studio is now the frame for works, exhibitions and projects – a continuation of the inheritance she grew up in.
Lærce trained as a pedagogue and spent fifteen years working with children, including countless creative workshops. She describes the free, process-led language children have before the adult inner critic takes hold. That eye – for the person, for society's blind spots, for the price paid by those who do not fit – lives on in the pictures. In recent years she has chosen art as her primary path. The aim is a life where Baryhl Art is full-time work.
Materials and working process
She treats collage as an expanded mixed-media language. Layer on layer. Experiment. Raw structures as a foundation, because they give dynamism, depth and movement. Paper fragments from books, magazines and posters meet sandpaper, filler, paint techniques and natural materials: coffee, salt, charcoal. Reuse is both aesthetic and stance – discarded materials get a new life and ask the viewer to think about consumption and value.
Transformation as theme
The through-line is the process of transformation: the point where the old life no longer nourishes, and a change of skin becomes necessary. For Lærce it always holds on three levels – the personal shift, the societal view and the spiritual aspect. The inner struggles along the way are coloured by choices, uncertainty, money and what she calls the eye of the hurricane: only there can you connect to the inner force we all hold.
She asks whether we are even awake enough to see what is happening close to us – or whether digital media and the news stream have pacified us. We cannot save the world in one grip, she writes, but we can shape our own future by taking responsibility for actions, words and behaviour. The works are process-based. Materials and symbols often steer the direction. Meaning often appears later. She experiences the pictures as mirrors that invite the viewer to feel, think and perhaps discover something in themselves.
CONNECTION TERMINATED sets a humanoid figure against a Madonna-like presence. Above them the connection is cut – and in the corner a small mark still whispers CONNECTING....
NOT AVAILABLE turns the classic icon inward: closed eyes, pink headphones, a gold halo. Availability and withdrawal in the same image.
ISOLATION seats an astronaut on a swing in a dark, collaged universe. A childhood motion in a space that is both cosmos and inner landscape.

11–20 September 2026 — bizArt Gallery, Østre Kapel, Holbæk. Juried Open Call. Opening 12 September, 16:00–18:00. Lærce shows three works.
October–November 2026 — Analog Kaffebar, Odense. Local exhibition.
1–16 May 2027 — Gallery Lowlands, Rørholmsgade 2B, 1352 København K. Further details, a possible workshop and opening hours will be announced in spring 2027.
